—Mayor Gene McGee, Ridgeland, Mississippi

Join us for the Mississippi Urban Forest Council’s 18th annual conference focusing this year on creating sustainable green infrastructure in your community.  The conference will feature industry experts who will share their knowledge and life experiences with trees and development, especially in urban areas and business districts.

The conference will feature five nationally renowned experts in the fields of urban forestry and landscape architecture, a pre-conference workshop about tree appraisals, and the presentation of the Mississippi Urban Forest Council’s Green Awards.

Featuring:

Kim Coder.  Professor of Community Forestry and Arboriculture at the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources.  Dr. Coder is a renowned educator, lecturer and author, and is often considered the “father of urban forestry.”  He has conducted tree workshops throughout the country.  Hear about his lifetime of experiences with urban trees during this information and action packed four hour workshop.

James Urban.  Jim Urban is a landscape architect with Urban and Associates, Inc., and urban arborist with over 30 years experience in urban development and planting trees in difficult urban sites.  Awarded the ASLA’s Landscape Architect Medal of Excellence in 2007 for significant contributions to landscape architecture policy, research, education, project planning, and design, Jim’s efforts have led to testing of new urban tree systems, planting concepts, and innovative approaches to landscape architecture design, detailing, and specifications.  He will share his experiences and you will hear from his new book “Up By Roots.”

Dennis ‘Buck’ Abbey.  Buck Abbey is associate professor of Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University and principal consultant to the Louisiana landscape architecture - planning firm, Abbey Associates, Inc.   He is a recognized authority on municipal landscape codes and author of books.   Mr. Abbey writes regularly on landscape codes and related municipal planning law.    He will share the latest from his book, “Super Tree Laws.”

Edward L. Blake, Jr.  Ed Blake is the principal of the Landscape Studio, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and is a forerunner of sustainable landscape design in the South and has worked on master planning for the University of Southern Mississippi and the Crosby Arboretum.  His work streams from life lessons of how infrastructure interacts with the land's ecosystem services.  Working with Spence Kellum, they compile system mosaics to evaluate site impacts of planning and design decisions.  The Studio's work is published worldwide.

Malcolm Guidry.  Mr. Guidry is a Certified Arborist through the International Society of Arboriculture and professional tree appraiser from Covington, Louisiana.  Learn about his guidelines for tree appraisals and their use.
